MUSEUMS, RECREATION SITES,
MONASTERIES OF KIEV CITY
Ukrainian contemporary art includes painting and sculpture in a wide
range of experimental and traditional styles. Icons and folk art are
displayed in museums purchased in galleries and shops. There are
several art museums with collections of Ukrainian and European art.
There are also museums with good collections of archeology, geology,
botany, zoology and aerospace. |
CENTRAL BOTANICAL GARDEN
Founded in 1936 the gardens offer a glimpse of a collection comprising
nearly 10,000 varieties of trees, bushes, and grass from all geographic
and botanic regions of the world. The 11th century Vydubychi monastery
is still open to the public on the garden's grounds.

Entrance tickets: 15 UAH for an adult, 5 UAH for a child, children
under 7 years old - free of charge.
HYDROPARK
Over 365 hectares stretch along this riverside park with sandy beaches
along the Dnipro River banks. One can enjoy swimming, volleyball,
football, paintball, tennis, badminton, sun bathing, beach rugby or
sailing on a rental boat. There is an open-air theater, coffee shop,
restaurant, disco, casino and beer bar.

PECHERSKA LAVRA MONASTERY AND CATACOMBS
Established in 1051, this monastery is one of the oldest and most
interesting in Kyiv. On the premises you can visit the caves where
monks lived and many other churches and museums. The miniatures museum
and the Scythian gold collection are fascinating sights. For a
beautiful view of the city climb up the stairs of the tallest belfry in
Ukraine (315 ft.).

ST. SOPHIA CATHEDRAL
Museum has been closed for one year because of political problems. To
enter museum, you must go with tour guide. Built by Prince Yaroslav the
Wise in 1037, this church was established to glorify the wisdom of
Christianity. One of the most interesting sights is the collection of
frescoes and mosaics inside the cathedral.

ST. VOLODYMYR CATHEDRAL
It took 34 years, many changes in planning, dismissal of several
architects and lots of artists to complete the construction of this
beautiful cathedral. It was officially consecrated in the presence of
Tsar Nikolay II in 1896. The interior walls are covered with paintings
from various artists, from outside the bright colours and strong
Byzantium style make St. Vladimir truly eye-catching.

MARIYINSKIY PALACE
This baroque palace was completed in 1752 for Empress Elisabeta
Petrovna. It burnt down in 1819 and was later reconstructed again to
accommodate monarchs and high ranking officials from Russia and it
serves the purpose till present day - for presidential and other
important meetings.

HOLY TRINITY (ST. YONAH) MONASTERY
The monastery was founded over Zvirinets caves in 1864. 800 monks lived
in the monastery before 1917. There were two churches in the monastery:
Holy Trinity Cathedral and Holy Protection Church. In 1934 the
monastery was closed and Holy Protection Church was destroyed. In 1991
the monastery was reopened. Zvirinets caves are as ancient as the Lavra
caves.

MUSEUM OF UKRAINIAN FINE ARTS
Spend an afternoon discovering Ukrainian folklore and tradition through
art. One can get a glimpse of a valuable collection of ancient
Ukrainian icons, paintings and sculpture.

UKRAINIAN MUSEUM OF FOLK ARCHITECTURE
AND RURAL LIFE
Located in the outskirts of Kyiv, this open air museum takes you
through Ukraine's history as you walk through the original homes of the
past which have been brought here and restored from all corners of
Ukraine. Traditional Ukrainian costume and ceramics are on exhibition.
